He takes up a spot. He won't make the grade. He will be lucky to bat as well as he did in '09, but did you read my article? The intangibles for repeating a season like last year are bigger than giving a rookie some air time. And will his lack of bat hurt the team? Will the inability to be more flexible hurt the team? Absolutely. But it doesn't matter if you're there to watch baseball for things bigger than statistics and wins. Griffey gives the M's that factor. This may not be a popular opinion: that there are more important things than wins and playoffs (and don't get me wrong: I've got nothing against such things), but I think it's important in an age in baseball that tends to lead away from the original intentions of the sport. This is a Mariners team that is oh-so-close to competing and needs talent everywhere they can get it, and as much as I like Griffey, he just does not deserve the opportunity of at bats on a contending team.
