Round one is finally complete, and with 16 countries now narrowed to 8, we’re ready to start some truly competitive baseball.  Not that there weren’t any fantastic games in the first round, but come on!  I’ve got three pathetic syllables for you: Pa-na-ma.

As for our boys in teal, we had some significant stats come to light in their “Spring Training Beta Experience.”  Rather than make you wade through 16 teams worth of stats, let’s lay down those numbers for you right here.

Canada (0-2)

Phillipe Aumont: 1.0 IP, 2 hits, 1 BB, 2 K, 0.00 ERA

Italy (1-2)

Alex Liddi: 2 singles, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run, 4 K, 1 SB, .375

Japan (2-1)

Kenji Johjima: 4 singles, 1 homerun, 2 RBI, 3 runs, 1 BB, O K, .500

Ichiro Suzuki: 4 singles, 3 runs, 1 K, 1 SB, .286

Netherlands (2-2)

Greg Halman: 1 double, 1 run, 7 K, .111

South Africa (0-2)

Anthony Phillips: 2 singles, 1 RBI, 1 run, 1 K, .222

Venezuela (3-1)

Jose Lopez: 1 single, 5 doubles, 1 homerun, 2 RBI, 6 runs, 2 BB, 0 K, .700

Endy Chavez: 3 singles, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 RBI, 2 runs, 1 K, .600

Felix Hernandez: 1 win, 4.0 IP, 1 hit, 2 BB, 4 K, 0.00 ERA

Carlos Silva: 4.0 IP, 6 hits, 1 BB, 2 K, 0.00 ERA

Combined Stats

Batting: 16 singles, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 2 homeruns, 9 RBI, 17 runs, 3 BB, 15 K, 2 SB, .400 in 70 at-bats.

Pitching: 1 win, 9.0 IP, 9 hits, 4 BB, 8 K, 0.00 ERA

Impressive, no?

So what’s next?  One thing’s for sure: if Venezuela keeps getting some hot Mariner performances, they might just meet a very dominant Korea in the final.  Can Ichiro’s bat come around in the second round?  Can the Netherlands pull some more victories out of thin air?  We’ll just have to see as 7 Mariners move into Round Two starting today.
